Comedy In Motion Takes Centre Stage with the WSO!

Winnipeg, MB – January 22, 2010 – Magical powers will be floating throughout the Centennial Concert Hall as the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra puts their slights of hand to good use with The Magic Orchestra! Many children will be introduced to and enchanted by the beauty and power of classical music in the Sundays with the Family series concert.

Many will remember popular entertainer Dan Kamin from his performance as “The Classical Clown” with the WSO a couple of seasons ago. He returns with another one of his “Comedy Concertos” that has become popular with symphonies around the world. The Magic Orchestra is a boisterous blend of comedy and classical music that involves WSO Resident Conductor Richard Lee as well as some unsuspecting audience members! Children will love watching Lee use his magical conductor’s baton to turn Kamin into a marionette!

Kamin created Johnny Depp’s physical comedy sequences in Benny and Joon and trained Robert Downey Jr. for his Oscar-nominated performances in Chaplin. He returned to his comedy roots to write “Charlie Chaplin's One-Man Show,” revealing the secrets of Chaplin's comic art. Dan’s new book “The Comedy of Charlie Chaplin: Artistry in Motion,” updates his earlier book and features an account of how he trained Downey for his Oscar-nominated performance.

Asked about his movie work, Kamin says, “Classic movies inspired me, and I came full circle by adding classic visual comedy to modern films. I taught Johnny Depp how to roll the coin around his fingers the way he does at the end of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean.’ But does he call? Never.”

The WSO is excited to present The Magic Orchestra. Designed to introduce children to the beauty and power of classical music, Kamin's uncanny movement skills make this a concert the whole family will enjoy. “Dan’s work is sophisticated,” says Jean-Francois Phaneuf, WSO Director of Artistic Operations, “but at the same time it’s accessible to everyone. His unique brand of comedy will delight the entire family and his show will be a hoot.”

Pre-concert activities began at 1 pm with crafts, rhythm ensembles, a conducting station, and more, in partnership with the Music For Young Children program!

The WSO performs the Sundays with the Family concert, The Magic Orchestra, on Sunday, January 24 at 2 pm at the Centennial Concert Hall.
