Former WSO Music Director Returns for Two Special Concerts! |

Winnipeg, MB – February 17, 2010 –The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) welcomes former music director Andrey Boreyko for just two concerts this weekend at the Centennial Concert Hall for the Masterworks program, Boreyko and Russian Masters! The city is buzzing with the return of Maestro Boreyko, WSO music director from 2001 to 2006. During his time in Winnipeg, he was praised for his musicianship and diverse contributions to the orchestra. He is now the chief conductor of the Bern Symphony and, as of September 2009, general music director of the Düsseldorf Symphony. He has worked with many of the world’s most renowned orchestras including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker, Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, and London Symphony. The WSO concert program on February 19 and 20 will feature Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Overture, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, and Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2 with WSO concertmaster Gwen Hoebig performing. Recognized as one of Canada's most outstanding violinists, Gwen Hoebig is a graduate of the Juilliard School in New York City. WSO concertmaster since 1987 and a champion of new music, she has given many Canadian premieres, and was recently recognized at the 50th anniversary celebrations for the Canadian Music Centre for her exemplary commitment to the performance of the music of Canadian composers. She has performed all the major violin concerti with orchestras across Canada, the United States and Europe. This weekend’s concert will be no exception! The completely SOLD OUT Dinner and a Symphony event will precede Saturday’s concert with Bistro 7 ¼ providing a four-course Russian-themed meal created specifically for the evening’s concert program! The WSO performs the Masterworks concert, Boreyko and Russian Masters, on Friday, February 19 and Saturday, February 20 at 8 pm at the Centennial Concert Hall.
