The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra is integral to Winnipeg's rich cultural life, delighting more than 100,000 audience members each year with innovative programming and musical excellence. The WSO presents educational programs for more than 25,000 students annually and tours outside the city reaching out to communities across Manitoba.

Time for the WSO to “Go Baroque” Again!

Winnipeg, MB – January 25, 2010 – The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO), together with Virtuosi Concerts, are proud to present Baroque II – Baroque & Beyond: The Passions of Spainon Saturday, January 30. The concert, being held at the Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall at The University of Winnipeg, presents a fascinating journey of The Passions of Spain - from early music through Spanish zarzuela and ending in 20th century Spain, guitar included!

The WSO Baroque String Quartet will heat things up with Ryszard Tyborowski on guitar, Maximilian Fleischman on fortepiano and Steinway and soprano Maria Luz Alvarez Riveiro. Born in Madrid, Riveiro began her musical education at the Royal Superior School of Singing of Madrid. Her repertoire of rarely heard music from 17th century Spain has been acclaimed throughout the world, ranging from the Middle Ages to the present time, with special focus on the Baroque oratorio and cantata.

You will be in for a toasty treat as The Passions of Spain melts the Winnipeg winter! For more information, visit www.virtuosi.mb.ca or www.wso.ca.
