Opening Night - Ritual

Rituals are the cornerstones of cultural traditions in all human societies, past or present. The Indigenous Festival Opening Night features a drum song in the “Grand Entry” tradition of North American Indigenous peoples. Spirit Rising and Walking Wolf will have the honour of singing an Intertribal song to open the festival by inviting guests to the join the colorful Grand Entry. Cree composer Andrew Balfour will present his composition Manitou Sky.

Friendship

West End Cultural Centre

On the second night of the Indigenous Festival, we create an atmosphere of friendship in the intimate setting of the West End Cultural Centre. Walking Wolf will welcome guests with a traditional drum song followed by Cree composer Andrew Balfour’s Raven Fanfare, performed by the WSO Quintet. Monohar will present dance traditions from India in a Tribute to Mother Earth. India meets India in a dance presentation by First Nations dancer Buffy Handel and Monohar performing to Andrew Balfour’s White Buffalo. The Asham Stompers present the traditional Metis music featuring Melissa St. Goddard on fiddle. Traveling West with Amjad will give the audience a unique glimpse at traditional Indian music with a contemporary twist. To close the evening, Eagle & Hawk bring back the Wild West Show with a little tongue in cheek.

Songs are the carriers of stories and traditions in all cultures. The intimate setting of the West End Cultural Centre will provide the backdrop for the songs and traditions of three Southern cultures. Pura Fe and Jennifer Kreisberg from Ulali will share the songs of their Native American ancestors followed by an energetic and mesmerizing dance performance by Viva Brasil. Licanantay will share musical traditions from Chile with contemporary twists.

Closing Night - Celebration

Burton Cummings Theatre

Join the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra on the not-to-be-missed final night of the Indigenous Festival celebrating “new traditions” at the Burton Cummings Theatre. The concert will feature Don Amero, Digging Roots, Shy-Anne Hovorka and Eagle & Hawk, representing some of Canada’s top Aboriginal artists, performing with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.
