Who was your idol growing up?
I was inspired by my band teacher, Dave Burger, who really fired up my interest in music. Like many brass players in the WSO, I listened obsessively to Canadian Brass recordings!
What is your favourite piece to play?
Judging from the number of times I play them, Conconce’s lyrical etudes are the front runners.
What is one of your most memorable live performances?
I have always been inspired by performances of Mahler’s works. Playing Symphonies number 1 with Rudolf Barshai and 9 with Andrey Boreyko stand out in my mind. I’m looking forward to playing Mahler’s second symphony this season with our own maestro Mickelthwaite.
What are some of your hobbies?
Lately, my most time-consuming hobby is looking after our five-month old son Matthew
What or who inspires you?
On a near-daily basis, I get to hear the wonderful artistry of our WSO brass section
If you could have dinner with one historical figure, who would that be?
Thomas Merton
