This unique concert, presented by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Winnipeg Cultural Capital of Canada 2010, and Manitoba Homecoming 2010, is sure to attract people to hear their favourites, and give everyone something new to love.

Canadian conductor Julian Kuerti (Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra) makes his WSO debut with a program of American and French music from the early 20th century. Daria Rabotkina returns to perform Ravel’s celebrated piano concerto, written for one hand only and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, which remains an American classic – it was even performed at the 50th Grammy Awards ceremony in 2008.

Inspired by his time in the U.S., Dvorák’s New World Symphony (now one of the most popular works in the modern repertoire) is a multi-cultural blend of Native and African-American musical traditions, and the composer’s Bohemian folk roots. Tovey’s Urban Runway offers a jazzy interpretation of American folk history – through the world of fashion.

The Artist’s Life

The struggle between creating art that you love and making a living doing it: such is the life of an artist, a reality that hasn’t changed much from the time of Mozart and Mendelssohn to today. One of Canada’s brightest young conductors offers his take on some classical jewels as we explore how life’s ups and downs, inspirations and challenges shape the music we love. Also watch as acclaimed Nova Scotia artist Holly Carr paints a new work inspired by the music, live on stage.

Someone has stolen David’s magic conductor’s baton! It must have been the criminal mastermind, Alfred Tonal. But Mr. A. Tonal is nowhere to be found and the show must go on! Judy suggests conducting with a piece of wet spaghetti. David suggests a rubber chicken. Nothing works. The only solution is to follow the clues and, with everybody’s help, get the magic baton back where it belongs!
