Concerts for Kids: Circus Terrifico

SUNDAY APRIL 29   2:00 PM
PRE-CONCERT ACTIVITIES   1:00 PM

Richard Lee, conductor
Motus O

“MOTUS O was the star turn of the night. An innovative and high energy troupe performing works that were imaginative and physically risky.” – Globe and Mail

We first meet our three circus performers boarding the train to their next show. A case of vanishing tickets thwarts their plans and strands them on the platform. It takes every trick in the book (and their suitcases) to create an impromptu show to raise money for new tickets. But it works! And as the train conductor watches the antics of our three clowns, he’s drawn into their mayhem and magic, finally agreeing to become their new ring master.

Circus Terrifico is a whimsical and poignant comedy featuring Tchaikovsky’s soaring scores and original music by Canadian composer Ray Luedeke. It makes audiences of all ages laugh out loud and leave with a (big, clownish) smile!

CONCERTS FOR KIDS: Beethoven Lives Upstairs

SUNDAY JANUARY 15   2:00 PM
PRE-CONCERT ACTIVITIES   1:00 PM

Richard Lee, conductor
Classical Kids Live

“One of the most completely wondrous examples of children’s entertainment ever!” – Billboard

This world famous show features a lively exchange of letters between young Christoph and his uncle. Their subject is the “madman” who has moved into the upstairs apartment of Christoph’s Vienna home. Through a touching correspondence dramatically underscored with the composer’s most beautiful excerpts, Christoph comes to understand the genius of Beethoven, the beauty of his music, and the torment of his deafness.

Audiences are captivated by more than twenty-five excerpts of the master’s music, including the Moonlight Sonata, Für Elise, and the great Fifth and Ninth Symphonies. The music is magically woven into the drama as two actors share their anecdotes and observations based on true incidents from the composer’s life. Presenting history, drama, music and fun, this engaging concert is an ideal family concert outing – for parents and grandparents alike!

Richard Lee, conductor
Frederick Liessens, percussion
Winnipeg Boys’ Choir; Carolyn Boyes & Annelie Reimer, co-directors

The return of Raymond Briggs’ heart- warming holiday film The Snowman brought audiences to their feet when last performed with live music in 2009.

One winter morning a little boy named James wakes up to find that everything outside has turned snow-white. Overjoyed, James rushes downstairs and into the yard, where he begins to build a snowman. James sleeps fitfully that night and at midnight wakes up and decides to check on his snowman. He opens the back door…and can’t believe his eyes…the snowman has come to life!

Rounding out the concert festivities will be your holiday favourites performed by the WSO.

Concerts for Kids: The Phantom of the Music Hall

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30   2:00 PM
PRE-CONCERT ACTIVITIES   1:00 PM

Richard Lee, conductor
Madcap Productions

“The rich content of the stories infused with humor held the attention of adults and children alike, and the actors did a masterful job engaging the audience and the conductor throughout the show.” – Billboard

The music hall has been double booked! How could this have happened? It’s all the elaborate plan of Mysterion, the phantom of the concert hall, who has mischievously booked two acts and locked them in the hall until they put on a show. As the concert is about to begin, Mysterion enters the hall and demands that the orchestra and Madcap perform together. Under threat, they bravely present classics of Mozart, Mendelssohn, Rimsky-Korsakov and much more.

It quickly becomes a wonderful collision between Cincinnati’s Madcap Productions  and the WSO! Together, Madcap presents a thrilling program filled with giant puppets, familiar family classics and beautiful orchestral music for all ages.
