Musical Club concert raises funds to aid aspiring performers

You often hear parents moaning about how expensive it is to enrol kids in hockey and other sports — not just to register them but to keep up with their equipment needs as they grow, travel from arena to arena and send them to various skills-improvement camps.

Music studies can also run up quite the bill, particularly if a young person decides to make music their career. Requirements like lessons, master classes, books and sheet music continue for years and years, not to mention instrument costs and maybe music camps. Serious music students should also attend professional concerts regularly. Add it all up and this means a serious outlay of money and time.

Without this kind of investment there would be no future artists. Orchestras would cease to exist. Audiences would be relegated to old recordings rather than live performances.

The Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg (WMC) understands the importance of supporting young musicians. Its annual concert series is mainly made up of young up-and-coming artists, with a few who have already made it mixed in.

WSO shows off flexibility during acrobatic concert

Winnipeg Free Press
May 14

TUMBLERS, contortionists, jugglers, oh my! The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra wrapped its Pops series with a show of dazzling athleticism and jaw-dropping beauty Friday night, courtesy of the world-renowned Peking Acrobats.

The acclaimed troupe grew out of the Great China Circus popularized during the 1920s. It became a professional company in 1958 and is touring North America in celebration of its 25th anniversary. The company consists of eighteen youthful acrobats plucked from China’s fabled training schools who perform tricks and stunts dating back 2,000 years.

The East-meets-West show also included an orchestral mix of classics led by WSO resident conductor Richard Lee, interspersed with the PA’s house band of musicians performing on traditional Chinese instruments.

Immediately from the opening Lion Dance, it was clear we were in for a good time. As two gigantic, winking lions leapt about the stage accompanied by both the WSO and Chinese band, gymnasts and a cyclist interwove among the other performers. The baby lions were completely adorable as they cavorted with their “parents.”

Let’s get ready to tumble!

High-flying, flexible Chinese acrobats help the WSO provide a pops concert with a twist

The musicians of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra have been pulling off dazzling feats of dexterity, co-ordination, stamina and breath control since September.

This weekend, they’ll close their 2010-11 season by showcasing the gravity-defying stunts of the Peking Acrobats in three pops shows.

The 18-member troupe of athlete-artists performs astounding displays of tumbling, balancing, strength, agility and pretzel-like flexibility. Based in Los Angeles, the elite performers are from the People’s Republic of China, where the acrobatic tradition dates back more than 2,000 years.

“The show is thrilling, it’s spectacular, it’s graceful and beautiful,” says Cynthia Dike-Hughes, vice-president of IAI Presentations, the California producer of the show.

“We remain true to the Chinese acrobatic art form. We add some 21st-century bells and whistles to it — some special effects and wonderful lighting — but by and large, what we strive for is to remain pure in the art form.”
