WSO’s take on Pink Floyd is rock with substance

Gwenda NemerofskyThe Jeans ‘n’ Classics Band is a rock group based out of London, Ontario whose website claims they “understand orchestra culture and are committed to help in the building of younger, loyal and sustainable audiences for symphony orchestras.”

This may be why they’re back performing this weekend with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for the ninth time. And while some older WSO Pops subscribers seem to have given away or traded in their tickets for tamer stuff, the newcomers who moved into their seats thoroughly enjoyed Friday night’s tribute to British band Pink Floyd and a host of other ’70s classic rock icons.

Lead singer Jean Meilleur, singers Katalin Kiss and Leah Salomaa, guitarist David Dunlop, electric bass Kevin Muir, drummer Jeff Christmas and Don Paulton on keyboard put together an exciting evening of music from the long-gone days of the rock concept album.

WSO on launch pad for lunar mission

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra will show off its dark side this weekend.

Winnipeg’s biggest band will team up with London, Ont.-based group Jeans SSRqn Classics for three performances of one of the most popular albums of all time, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon. The concert celebrating the milestone release by the British progressive rockers gives a literal meaning to the term, symphonic rock.

“It is a proper rock SSRqn’ roll treatment,” says Peter Brennan, Jeans SSRqn Classic founder. “It’s not elevator-music homogenized Pink Floyd, it’s the real thing.”

Brennan scored the music for the show, one of almost 50 in the company’s catalogue, which includes full concerts of the songs of Queen, Elton John, the Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and Led Zeppelin.
