Art Exhibit: Legends from the Kalevala

July 26, 2010 10:30 amtoAugust 15, 2010 2:00 pm

Recently retired from the WSO, cellist Tom Watrous played with the symphony for 37 seasons. Now enjoying retirement, he has the pleasure of announcing an exciting art exhibit that will be taking place July 26 – August15:

LEGENDS FROM THE KALEVALA
(Folk epic of the Finnish People)

This exhibit will feature 19 water colours by San Francisco artist, Patrick Kroboth, inspired by various legends found in “The Kalevala.”  Mr. Kroboth completed his “Kalevala” series in the mid-1970′s, with exhibitions following in San Francisco, Finland, Russia and Germany. These art works have not been seen in public for twenty-five years.

2010 marks the 175th anniversary of the first publication of “The Kalevala.”  Its influence on artists, choreographers and musicians has been immense and universal, most notably with Jean Sibelius, the celebrated Finnish composer. Mr. Kroboth’s water colours include a number of evocative images that were set to music by Sibelius:  ”The Swan of Tuonela,” “Luonnotar,” “The Origin of Fire” and “Pohjola’s Daughter.”

Location:  The Fleet Galleries, 65 Albert Street, Winnipeg

Dates:  Monday, July 26th  -  Sunday, August 15th.

Hours:
Mondays: 10:30 – 4:00
Tuesday to Fridays: 9:00 – 5:00
Saturdays: 10:30 – 4:00
Sundays: 10:30 – 4:00

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

I cordially invite one and all to take in this fantastic exhibition. Please find below a sampling of Mr, Kroboth’s art works.

Cordially,
Tom Watrous

Brandon, MB: Beethoven Violin Concerto

March 6, 2011
3:00 pmto5:30 pm

March 6  3:00 pm

“Her masterful rendering was rich with virtuosic, seemingly endless phrases crafted to perfection, with wonderful fluidity and great feeling.”
- Winnipeg Free Press

WSO concertmaster for more than 20 years, Gwen Hoebig performs Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. One of Canada’s outstanding violinists, Gwen was recently recognized at the Canadian Music Centre’s 50th anniversary for her exemplary commitment to the performance of the music of Canadian composers.

Composed for the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1943, Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra is a 20th century orchestral classic. A response to the rapidly increasingly technical skills that American orchestras were achieving after WWI, the work showcases the orchestra and all its sections as soloists, both alone and in groups.

Gwen Hoebig, violin
